Hassenfeld Library: LS Parents

How to find Fountas and Pinnell level in the USN collection

1. To look up a specific book:

  • Go to the Library Catalog
  • Type the title into the Search box
  • Fountas and Pinnell levels are listed under some titles in the list of results

2. To search for all books with a particular reading level:

  • Go to the Library Catalog
  • At the bottom of the Search box, click on “Reading Programs” and change to “Fountas and Pinnell”
  • Set your preferred range of levels
  • Click "enter" to find all books within your range range
  • You can also search for a specific keyword, title, subject, author, or series within your range

Please note that not all titles in the USN Library collection have a Fountas and Pinnell level.  We strongly encourage students to read based on their interests, not only their level.

Parent Resources

Parents, did you know you can use our library resources too? Come check out a book, explore our online databases, or ask the librarians to recommend a great read for you or your child! To set up a parent account in our catalog, email George LaBour (glabour@usn.org).

We also have a section specifically for parents and teachers, designated by the call number PRF (for Professionals, or Parents & Families). You can browse the collection to find books on a number of parenting topics, like the ones below.

Book Access Policy

Parents and guardians have the right and responsibility to monitor and guide their children’s reading choices. According to the ALA guidelines, “Parents and guardians who do not want their children to have access to specific library services, materials, or facilities should so advise their own children.” Teachers also have the right and responsibility to decide on class-based reading choices.

However, teachers and Library staff are not expected to take on the role of gatekeeper outside of classroom literacy endeavors. This means that, while Library staff can and will guide students to reading material that is appropriate and of interest to them, they will not restrict a child from checking out a book that may be above their reading or maturity level, unless explicitly instructed to do so by the child’s parent or guardian.

Any questions, comments, or concerns from families about student library choices should be directed to Kate Pritchard, Library Director, at kpritchard@usn.org or 615-277-1126.
